Benefits of Supported Housing

Benefits of ‘Supported’ Community Housing

The Community Housing Social Worker is available for :

Advocacy

Empowering and supporting people in matters relating to family, housing, court and beneficiary issues with agencies such as WINZ, CYFS, Housing NZ, and the Courts.

Crisis Response

Identifying main issues, making a plan and setting goals. Referring on to the Counselling Centre when needed.

Ongoing Support

Supporting people dealing with grief, depression, isolation, addiction and mental health issues; monitoring progress and goals set and achieved.

Resourcing

Helping people access appropriate community programmes and services to empower, educate and inform.

  • Tenants are supported through crisis times and issues that could, without support result in a family leaving a tenancy.
  • Often the support from our Community Housing Social Worker can empower a family to deal with issues as they arise rather than avoiding the problem.
  • Learning essential home management and life skills needed to maintain stability in long-term tenancy and work towards home ownership where appropriate. Children are able to stay settled in one school, rather than being moved around.
  • Families become integrated into the community support network.
  • A dedicated team of staff and volunteers are committed to supporting tenants and providing the resources and skills to empower people to set and reach goals.
  • Access to the other VisionWest Community Services.
  • Invitation to community events, support groups and community groups where new friendships and peer support are developed.
